I know there are some variations on the Lego trains, but will they "sit" on traditional O-gauge track? Do they have the same outside rail dimensions? I think I might add this one to my layout as a static piece parked on a siding. I see the power functions can be added. It's funny reading the reviews as they mostly talk about wheel slip when adding the power. One reader caught on to add a rubber band to the wheel, what we here call a "traction tire". Thanks

The short answer is no. You could modify the LEGO rolling stock and fit them with O gauge trucks but a locomotive would be more of a challenge. The set your looking at would still make a cool looking display piece for Christmas. You could paint the LEGO track to make it look a little better than just all black.

Here is a Lego Scooby Doo Mystery Machine I adapted to a E-Z Street chassis which is O scale compatible. Lots of Dremeling and super glue. "Lego" scale (whatever that is) is a little big for O scale so I needed to size down vertically and horizonally. Unclepeterr

LEGO gauge (L gauge in the LEGO train world.) is wider than O, so LEGO trains will not fit on O gauge track. And due to the way they are built, you could not regauge L to O, unless you are comfortable taking a sander to your LEGO pieces. But they are still fun to play with.

I have mounted Lego cars on O gauge trucks, but the problem comes in when dealing with engine. The Lego system is all metric and comes out about 2 mm bigger than O gauge. (not exact difference, just an eyeball observation.) It would take some significant work to change the gauge and still use all Lego parts. I am fairly positive it could be done, just never had the time to work out.

Lego trains have a following all there own. Some of the rolling stock and locomotives are amazing. Below are some pictures I took of a display by PennLUG at the York Greensburg Show in 2013.

Re: The Lego Trains, do they fit O-gauge? (2024)

FAQs

Can Lego trains run on an O-Scale track? ›

MTH, K-Line, MARX, Williams, Weaver or just about any O-Gauge or S-Gauge trainset and accessory can be used with LEGO bricks.

Do all Lego trains fit on the same track? ›

Over the years, we've never changed the width of the train tracks. The train cars from all earlier models will run on the new track and connect to the new trains.

What gauge are Lego trains? ›

Lego trains use a nominal gauge of 37.5 mm ( 1+15⁄32 in), based on 5-stud track centerlines gauge. This is circa 5.5 mm wider than O gauge (30 mm [1.181 in] – 33 mm [1.3 in]). The 37.5 mm length is not derived by a certain scale ratio.

Are all Duplo train tracks compatible? ›

DUPLO® train tracks haven't changed much over the years, so older tracks are fully compatible with the current ones.

Which is better HO or O scale trains? ›

O scale is obviously a much larger commitment—HO scale is half the size, and is one of the most popular scales due to its relatively easy entry point. Smaller scales, therefore, can be ideal for beginners, but larger scales allow you to create much more detail and realism in your layouts.

What scale is O scale in trains? ›

In the United States, O gauge is defined as 1:48 (0.25 inches to the foot, "quarter inch scale" - 1/4 inch equals one foot). This is also a common dollhouse scale, giving more options for buildings, figures, and accessories.

Why did LEGO discontinue trains? ›

It was discontinued because the parts were expensive to produce relative to the prices LEGO could charge for them, and because the toy industry in general has been moving away from products that draw power from AC line voltage for safety reasons.

Are Lego trains too small? ›

Practically all the trains LEGO has released are built to a vehicle gauge that is 6 studs wide (barring the odd handrail perhaps). They've done this since they first introduced trains into the LEGO world, whereas their cars have inexplicably doubled in size over the years.

What size track is a LEGO train set? ›

Lego track is 6 wide - the standards all count the gauging from the stud the rails are on. For the most part yes. The other manufacturers sell track that is compatible with Lego's normal 6 Wide track.

Why is it called o scale? ›

The letter O is what is used today as in O Gauge or O Scale. The confusion with the number 0 (zero) dates back to the early 1900s when the wide European track gauges were numbered 1, 2 and 3. 0 (Zero) gauge was smaller than 1 and is now what we call O Gauge.

Which model train gauge is best? ›

HO Scale. "HO" means "half - o;" models are half the size of O Scale. HO is the most popular scale with the greatest selection of sets and accessories, as it allows lots of railroad action in a small area.

What scale is Z gauge trains? ›

Z scale
Scale1.385 mm to 1 ft (305 mm)
Scale ratio1:220
Model gauge6.5 mm / 0.256 in
Prototype gauge1,435 mm (4 ft 81⁄2 in) standard gauge

Are all LEGO train tracks compatible? ›

There's some compatibility between all the LEGO® train tracks. Over the years, we've never changed the width of the train tracks.

Are toy train tracks interchangeable? ›

A: Yes, most wooden train sets (Melissa and Doug, Kidkraft, Thomas Wooden Railway, Brio) all operate on the same gauge, meaning that the tracks are all compatible. The thing that changes from brand to brand is the design on the tracks and the durability of the wood.

Are all train tracks the same size? ›

About 60% of the world's railroad tracks use the standard 1435mm (4 ft 8 12 in) gauge today. The other 40% use either a narrow gauge or a broad gauge. The gauge wider than 1435mm is called the broad gauge, including 1676mm, 1524mm, 1520mm, etc.

Can O gauge trains run on o27 track? ›

O and O-27 use the same width straight track so O-27 trains can run on O Gauge track and in some cases O Gauge trains can run on O-27 track.

What size track is a Lego train set? ›

Lego track is 6 wide - the standards all count the gauging from the stud the rails are on. For the most part yes. The other manufacturers sell track that is compatible with Lego's normal 6 Wide track.

What radius is Lego train track? ›

There are five pieces available directly from LEGO® for your train track needs: a 16-stud straight piece, a 16-stud curved piece with a radius of 40 studs (measured from the center of the track), a left and a right switch (~32 studs long each), and the 4-stud-long flex track piece.

On which track does the toy train run? ›

In India, many trains that run on meter-gauge tracks and that are meant for adults are called toy trains. The trains that run on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway are an example.
